KnowBout terms of service

These terms are the agreement between you and KnowBout (“we”, “us”) for your use of the KnowBout app and related services (package app.knowbout). By creating an account, or by playing as a guest, you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use KnowBout. They’re written in plain language on purpose.

1. Who can use KnowBout

KnowBout is for users aged 13 and over. By using it you confirm you are 13 or older and that you can form a binding agreement with us. (In some countries a higher age applies for consenting to certain data uses, such as marketing — see the privacy policy.) If you use KnowBout on behalf of someone else, you confirm you’re allowed to accept these terms for them.

2. Your account

• You can play as a guest, or sign in with Google (on Android) or Apple (on iOS) to save your progress across devices.
• You’re responsible for activity on your account. Keep your sign-in secure and let us know if you think someone else has accessed it.
• You choose a username (not your legal name). It’s visible to other players on leaderboards, in bouts and on challenge links.
• You can export or delete your account at any time from Profile → Account & settings, or see our account deletion page.

3. Fair play & acceptable use

To keep KnowBout fun and fair for everyone, you agree not to:

• cheat, automate play, use bots, or tamper with scores, timing, XP, streaks or leaderboards;
• access or interfere with the service using anything other than the official app (no scraping, reverse engineering, or probing our systems beyond normal play);
• choose a username, or send content via challenge links, that is illegal, offensive, hateful, harassing, sexual, deceptive, impersonates someone, or infringes anyone’s rights;
• harass, abuse, threaten or harm other players;
• use KnowBout for anything unlawful, or break any applicable law while using it.

We may reclaim, reset or change usernames that breach these rules or that impersonate others.

4. Reporting content, moderation & enforcement

If you see a username or any content that breaks these rules, you can report it by emailing admin@knowbout.app (questions can also be flagged directly in the app). Reports are reviewed by people.

Where content or behaviour breaks these terms or the law, we may remove or hide content, change or reclaim a username, restrict features, or suspend or close an account. Where the law requires it, we’ll give you a clear reason for a decision that affects you and, where available, tell you how to challenge it. We act proportionately and don’t discriminate.

5. “Ghost” bouts

When no live opponent is available, KnowBout may replay a recorded “ghost” run from another player — always clearly badged as a recording, never presented as a live human. By playing, you agree that your own attempts may be recorded and replayed to other players as a ghost. If you delete your account, your ghost runs are anonymised so they no longer identify you. More detail is in our privacy policy.

6. Game content, XP & virtual items

• XP, levels, streaks, titles, badges, cosmetics and potions are part of the game. They have no monetary value, can’t be exchanged for cash, and can’t be transferred or sold. We may adjust, expire or remove them as part of running and improving the game.
• Trivia questions are generated with the help of AI and are provided for entertainment only — they are not professional, factual or advisory statements. We work hard on accuracy but can’t guarantee every question or answer is error-free; if you spot a problem, please use the in-app flag/report so we can fix it.

7. Intellectual property & “fan-made” content

KnowBout, including the app, its artwork, design and original content, belongs to us or our licensors and is protected by law. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use KnowBout for your own enjoyment under these terms.

KnowBout’s trivia about real-world subjects (films, music, games, sport and so on) is fan-made and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any of the people, brands or works it references. All trademarks and copyrights belong to their respective owners; we reference them only descriptively (nominative use).

8. App stores (Apple App Store & Google Play)

You may download KnowBout from an app store such as the Apple App Store or Google Play. These terms are between you and us only — not the app store — and the app store is not responsible for KnowBout. In particular:

• we (not the app store) are solely responsible for KnowBout and its content, and for any maintenance and support — the app store has no obligation to provide support;
• we (not the app store) are responsible for any product warranties and for handling any claim that KnowBout, or your use of it, infringes someone’s rights or fails to meet a legal or regulatory requirement;
• on Apple devices, your licence is limited to use on Apple-branded products you own or control, as permitted by the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions;
• you confirm you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo (or designated as “terrorist-supporting”) and that you are not on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties;
• you must also comply with the applicable app-store terms of use.

Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you. The same applies to Google in respect of the Google Play version.

9. Purchases & subscriptions

KnowBout offers optional paid features. All purchases are sold and billed by your app store (Google Play or the Apple App Store) — we never see or store your payment details — and that store’s purchase, billing and refund terms apply alongside these terms.

• KnowBout Plus is an auto-renewing subscription (monthly or annual) that unlocks unlimited, ranked play on specialty topics plus cosmetic and convenience perks. New members may be offered a free trial (currently 7 days): billing begins automatically when the trial ends unless you cancel before then in your app-store subscription settings.
• The exact price and renewal period are shown before you buy. Subscriptions renew automatically at the then-current price until you cancel — you can cancel any time in your app-store account settings, and cancelling takes effect at the end of the current billing (or trial) period. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
• Cosmetic packs are one-off purchases of in-game cosmetic items (avatars, banners, titles). They’re licensed to your account for use inside the game, have no monetary value, and can’t be transferred or exchanged for money. Your statutory rights are unaffected.
• If you’re a consumer in the UK/EU you have a statutory 14-day right to cancel digital purchases; by starting to use a paid feature immediately you ask us to begin at once and acknowledge you may lose that cancellation right once performance has begun. Refund requests are handled by your app store.
• Paid perks are cosmetic or convenience-based and never affect leaderboard or matchmaking fairness. We don’t sell randomised rewards; if that ever changes, the odds will be disclosed.
• If your subscription lapses you keep your account and progress — Plus-only features simply switch off until you resubscribe.

10. Other third-party services

KnowBout also relies on Google (sign-in and, on Android, push delivery), Apple (sign-in and, on iOS, push delivery), Supabase (database/hosting), RevenueCat (purchase management), and Expo (push delivery). Your use of those services is also subject to their own terms, and we’re not responsible for third-party services we don’t control.

11. Availability, accessibility & changes to the service

We’re still building KnowBout, so features may change, pause or be removed, and the service may occasionally be unavailable. We may update or discontinue parts of the game over time. We aim to follow good accessibility practice and welcome feedback at admin@knowbout.app if something is hard to use.

12. Disclaimers

KnowBout is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent permitted by law, we don’t make warranties that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that the trivia content is wholly accurate. Nothing in these terms removes rights you have as a consumer that can’t legally be excluded.

13. Limitation of liability

To the extent permitted by law, we won’t be liable for indirect or unforeseeable loss arising from your use of KnowBout, and our total liability to you is limited to the amount (if any) you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. We don’t exclude or limit liability for things that can’t legally be excluded (such as fraud, or death or personal injury caused by our negligence), and your mandatory consumer rights are unaffected.

14. Suspension & termination

You can stop using KnowBout and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or end your access if you breach these terms (for example, cheating or abuse). If your account is removed for a serious breach, your progress and any virtual items may be lost.

15. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms — for example, when paid features are added. If we make material changes, we’ll update this page and the “last updated” date below, and where appropriate let you know in the app. Continuing to use KnowBout after a change means you accept the updated terms.

16. Governing law & disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction — except that, if you’re a consumer elsewhere, you keep the benefit of any mandatory protections, and the right to bring proceedings, of your home country. If you have a complaint, please contact us first at admin@knowbout.app so we can try to resolve it; consumers in the EU/EEA may also be able to use a national alternative dispute resolution body.

17. General

• Severability — if part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest still applies.
• No waiver — if we don’t enforce a term straight away, we don’t lose the right to do so later.
• Assignment — you may not transfer your rights under these terms; we may transfer ours (for example, if our business is reorganised), without reducing your rights.
• Entire agreement — these terms and our privacy policy are the whole agreement between us about KnowBout.
• Notices — we may give you notices in the app or by email.
